At the Vrelinghuis, we offer various types of procedures for terminating pregnancies up to 22 weeks. The procedure that is right for you depends on how far along you are in your pregnancy. The ultrasound performed at the clinic is always the deciding factor in determining which procedure is possible.

Preparation at home

Proper preparation is important. Read up on the treatment that’s right for your situation, fill out the health questionnaire, and bring the necessary documents and items with you to our clinic in Utrecht. Exactly what you’ll need depends on the treatment. Read more about the different treatments for additional information. To maintain a calm and private environment in our clinic, children are not permitted. Please arrange childcare in advance.

At the clinic

Intake and Treatment

When you arrive at the Vrelinghuis, we’ll first perform an ultrasound to determine how far along you are in your pregnancy. This will be followed by an intake consultation with a doctor or nurse. We will discuss your decision, your health, and which treatment is best for you. Depending on the method you choose, you will take medication (abortion pill) or undergo a brief procedure (suction curettage or second-trimester treatment). Our team of experienced doctors and nurses will guide you through every step and ensure that you feel as comfortable as possible.

Immediately after treatment

Depending on the method

What to expect immediately after the procedure varies depending on the method. If you have a suction curettage or a later-term abortion, you’ll stay at the clinic for a while to recover. You’ll be given something to eat and drink, and we’ll monitor you; usually, you can go home after one to a few hours. With the abortion pill, you’ll take the first tablet at the clinic and can then go home. The rest of the treatment takes place at home, following the instructions you are given.

We’re here to support you with any questions or emotions that may arise later on, and we’ll work with you to discuss birth control options so you can move forward with proper protection.

Costs

If you live in the Netherlands and have health insurance, the costs of treatment are fully covered by the Ministry of Health, Welfare and Sport. Please bring your insurance card or policy statement and a valid form of identification. If you do not have these documents, you can request an extract from the civil registry at city hall and bring it with you.

If you do not officially reside in the Netherlands and are not insured, you are responsible for the costs, which must be paid in cash or by debit card before treatment.
